Perfect for lunch or dinner, this sandwich is a timeless favorite. Featuring simple ingredients and quick steps, it's ideal for anyone craving a comforting, hearty meal.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 4 slices rye bread
  • 1 large onion, thinly sliced
  • 4 slices Swiss cheese (or American cheese)
  • 2 tbsp butter
  • Salt and pepper, to taste

Instructions

  1. Caramelize onions: Heat 1 tbsp butter in a skillet, add sliced onions, and cook until golden and soft. Set aside.
  2. Shape the patties: Divide ground beef into two equal portions, form into patties, season with salt and pepper.
  3. Cook patties: Heat a skillet over medium-high heat, cook patties for 4-5 minutes on each side until fully cooked. Remove from skillet.
  4. Assemble sandwiches: Butter one side of each slice of rye bread. On the unbuttered side, layer one slice of cheese, cooked patty, caramelized onions, another slice of cheese, and top with the other bread slice, butter side out.
  5. Grill: Cook each sandwich in a skillet until the bread is golden brown and the cheese is melted, about 3-4 minutes per side.
  6. Serve: Slice and enjoy while warm.

Notes

  • Swiss cheese is traditional, but you can use American or cheddar for variation.
  • Make sure the heat is not too high when grilling the sandwich to prevent burning the bread.
