For the Frosting:

  • ½ cup unsalted butter
  • ¼ cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 2 cups powdered sugar
  • ¼ cup milk
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour a 9-inch cake pan.
  2. In a large bowl, whisk together flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking soda, baking powder, and salt.
  3. Add melted butter, buttermilk, eggs, and vanilla. Mix until combined.
  4. Stir in hot water until the batter is smooth.
  5. Pour batter into the prepared pan and bake for 30-35 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
  6. Let the cake cool completely before frosting.
  7. For the frosting, melt butter in a saucepan, then stir in cocoa powder. Remove from heat.
  8. Add powdered sugar, milk, and vanilla, beating until smooth.
