This patty melt recipe features juicy beef patties with melted cheese, perfectly caramelized onions, and a unique secret sauce, all sandwiched between buttery toasted rye bread. It's a classic diner favorite with an extra boost of flavor that’s perfect for a hearty meal.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 1 large onion, thinly sliced
  • 4 slices Swiss or cheddar cheese
  • 4 slices rye bread
  • 2 tbsp butter
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • Secret Sauce: ¼ cup mayonnaise, 1 tbsp ketchup, 1 tbsp mustard, ½ tsp garlic powder, and 1 tsp pickle relish

Instructions

  1. Prepare the onions: In a skillet over medium heat, melt 1 tbsp of butter and add sliced onions. Cook until deeply caramelized, about 10-15 minutes.
  2. Cook the patties: Shape ground beef into two patties, season with salt and pepper, and cook in a hot skillet for 3-4 minutes on each side or until desired doneness.
  3. Assemble the melt: Place a slice of cheese on each slice of bread. Add a cooked patty, top with caramelized onions, and spread a generous amount of the secret sauce on the other slice.
  4. Grill the sandwich: Melt remaining butter in a skillet, then grill each sandwich until bread is golden and cheese is melted, about 2-3 minutes per side.
  5. Serve: Cut in half and enjoy with extra sauce if desired.

Notes

  • Rye bread adds a classic flavor, but sourdough or multigrain can be used.
  • Customize the secret sauce to taste by adjusting ketchup or mustard levels.
  • For added flavor, you can mix Worcestershire sauce into the beef patties.
