Cookies:

  • 2 ½ cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • ¾ cup granulated sugar
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • ½ tsp baking powder
  • ¼ tsp salt

Royal Icing:

  • 4 cups powdered sugar
  • 3 tbsp meringue powder
  • 68 tbsp water
  • Food coloring (optional)

Instructions

  • Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  • In a bowl, cream butter and sugar until light and fluffy.
  • Add the egg, vanilla extract, and mix until combined.
  • Sift in the flour, baking powder, and salt, then mix into a dough.
  • Roll the dough out to ¼ inch thickness and cut with heart-shaped cookie cutters.
  • Bake for 8–10 minutes or until edges are slightly golden. Cool completely.
  • For icing, mix powdered sugar, meringue powder, and water until smooth. Add food coloring if desired.
  • Pipe or spread the icing onto the cooled cookies. Let it set before serving.

  • Add gel food coloring for vibrant icing.
  • Cookies can be stored in an airtight container for up to 1 week.
  • Adjust water in icing for desired consistency (thicker for outlining, thinner for flooding).
