This spicy Italian sausage pasta recipe combines tender pasta, flavorful sausage, and a rich, spicy sauce for a hearty, comforting dish.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 12 oz penne or your favorite pasta
  • 1 lb spicy Italian sausage, casing removed
  • 1 medium onion, diced
  • 3 garlic cloves, minced
  • 1 can (14.5 oz) diced tomatoes
  • 1/2 cup heavy cream
  • 1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • 1 tbsp olive oil
  • 1 tsp red chili flakes (adjust to taste)
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • Fresh basil for garnish

Instructions

  1. Cook pasta according to package instructions. Reserve 1 cup of pasta water before draining.
  2. In a large skillet, heat olive oil over medium heat. Add sausage, breaking it into small pieces, and cook until browned.
  3. Add onion and garlic, sautéing until fragrant and translucent.
  4. Stir in diced tomatoes, chili flakes, and heavy cream. Simmer for 5–7 minutes.
  5. Add cooked pasta to the sauce and toss to coat. Use reserved pasta water to adjust consistency if needed.
  6. Stir in Parmesan cheese and season with salt and pepper to taste.
  7. Serve hot, garnished with fresh basil and additional Parmesan if desired.

Notes

  • For less spice, use mild Italian sausage or reduce chili flakes.
  • Substitute heavy cream with a dairy-free alternative for a lighter option.
  • Best enjoyed fresh, but leftovers can be stored in an airtight container for up to 3 days.
